Thoughtful game

First of the biannual friendly matches against Kevin, ex-workmate from St Andrew's Bowls Club, Biggleswade.

It's Kevin's first bowl of the year so we have a couple of full ends before starting in earnest. And I'm off to a good start, going 7-1 up. Not long before Kevin pulls back. After thirteen ends it's 10-10.

We always have a thoughtful, strategic game and the second half of the match is certainly that. Most heads tight, not much in it. Very pleased with the odd drive when I'm in trouble.

By the twenty-second end Kevin is staging a comeback. He's won the last three ends to change the score from 19-12  to 19-16. For the fourth end on the trot, he has shot, his bowl close behind the jack. Mindful of my successful drives, his last is a blocker, stopping me making another attempt to clip out his shot.

Forced onto the other hand, I play with weight, aiming for my two bowls a couple of feet in front of the jack. Bang on target, one is pushed through to hit Kevin's shot back a few feet. Three to me!
