Rain, rain and more rain!

Weather been miserable this week, a month's rain falling in a few days. Monday's Club competition match was called off. Beginning to suffer withdrawal symptoms after almost a week without a proper game of bowls.

Things looked a bit ominous this afternoon when the opposition captain 'phoned to call off the B Team's away match at Huntingdon because of a waterlogged green. Strange, thought I, strolling across the local park shortly after, the ground firm and water-free without any special drainage. Our A Team also had their game called off at Sawtry.

But no problem for the C Team at St Ives green. Not a clue that we've been inundated. Our grounds team really do perform a marvellous job. Probably the best green in the County this year.

Big match this evening, at home to division 4 leaders Brampton B. Though there's not much in it. We're second, one point behind with a game in hand.

Things look a desperate after seven ends, losing on all three rinks. I'm skipping on rink 3, 5-11 down. My team are consistently short, creating a wall of bowls in front of the jack. But things suddenly click as I get a few winners. Growing in confidence, with seven consecutive winning ends we go 19-11 ahead. Finish ahead 23-13.

On rink 5 we're behind throughout, finishing 11-15. Rink 4, the last to finish, is close. When we pick up five on the fifteenth end it looks like the overall score might be 5-2 to us on points. Unfortunately not. On the penultimate end we drop four. In heavy rain we fail to score the two necessary for a win.

So with a 1-2 loss in rinks, but 49-46 to us in total bowls, we lose 3-4 on points. In the clubhouse we're treated to a tea of jacket potatoes, cheese and baked beans. Perfect! Here are this evening's scorecards.
