First solo practise 2019

Got the green all to myself this evening. And before starting my first solo practise, I'm trying out the theory in the training video about Rhythm Speed. The suggestion is your bowls will end up bang on the jack if the same delivery is used for bowls and jack. So I'm rolling four jacks to see if there's any consistency in where they end up using my standard delivery. Then do the same with my four bowls.

Come to two conclusions. Firstly, if the same concentration is applied to delivering the jacks as I do the bowls, can get the jacks to the same spot with surprising consistency. See image above. Secondly, it might work on super-fast Australian greens, but on a fresh English green there's no way an identical swing will deliver the bowls anywhere near the jack. End up way too short.

The exercise is of some benefit. Recognise the importance of using full concentration to deliver the jack to standard length. And once the standard swing is going for the bowls, I'm getting encouraging results.

Switch to another rink so there's no advantage for the solo practice. Result? As the graph below shows, with 42 out of 72 bowls (58%) within three feet, only got a better result once in the whole of last year, plus one equal. Very encouraging, given it's my first attempt in seven months. Particularly encouraging 44% were within two feet. That's almost two bowls very close to the jack on each end.

Desperate for more practise. Off to Scotland on Thursday. Warm up session with my brothers on Friday evening at Scone Park Bowling Club. Then the serious matches for the Harry Roscow Trophy. Won it both occasions last year. My brothers are going to be after blood. Tuesday afternoon roll up and Wednesday evening selection/practise session for the men's league teams should prepare me for battle!
