At home to Papworth B team this evening, the team we beat 5-2 way back at the beginning of May. That was when we had a whole string of away games to start the league season. And a whole string of away wins too. Put us in the top three of the division. Not bad, being newly promoted.
Now remember the wise words of our team captain when I enthused about our performance. 'There's a long way to go' he said, with the world weary tone of someone who'd seen the team bounce between divisions over several seasons.
And how right he was. This evening got trounced on the other two rinks and we lost in the last few ends of our game, having been close all the way throughout. Papworth B had problems getting a team together at the beginning of the season and lost their first few games. At least we won't get demoted, and may well end up in the top half of the division. That would be a good enough result.
And my performance? Got a few good bowls near the jack and gave my opposite number a challenge. But far too many short bowls again, particularly bowling back along the end. Seem very slow to adapt. Must sort it!
Half way through the evening a delicious aroma of fried onions spread across the green. At the end we all retired to a meal of sausages, onions, rolls and a huge bowl of baked beans. Well done to the ladies in the kitchen... the A team were playing at home too, so they fed almost fifty hungry bowlers.
