First match in the Handicap Cup club competition... and the last. Crashed out to an A team player. Suppose I was always going to struggle. Came away from this one feeling I should have done better.
Didn't have much of a handicap advantage. He had to get to 23, me to 21. But the final score of 23-4 does look rather poor.
Started off utilising my new upright stance. Five down after three ends, thought I'd better to revert to the Quasimodo style crouched stance. Within a couple of ends got my eye in and won two of the next three. But I was up against a canny player. Spotting I'd now got the line, on the ninth end he moved the mat as far up the green as I've ever seen it placed. Back to square one fixing aiming points.
Didn't help my cause by knocking his bowl to become shot on at least three occasions when I was sitting pretty. Just trying too hard to catch up. After the fifteenth end it poured down for twenty minutes. When we restarted the green was heavy. Had to revert back to the upright stance to get enough power.
Analysing the scorecard afterwards, realised for a lot of the ends there was only one bowl between us. He won ten of his sixteen winning ends by one. And that's the difference... consistency! Getting at least one bowl near the jack on every end.
So now six club competitions to go. Here's this afternoon's scorecard...
