Solo practise recalibration

Set the first baseline scores for solo practise last July, see Solo practise - baselining progress

Last Friday achieved some of my best scores. Got 40 out of 72  (56%) bowls within one metre of the jack and 15 out of 18 ends (83%) with two or more bowls within one metre. At the club roll up this afternoon almost all my bowls were on line and near or behind the jack.

Measuring bowls within one metre is handy, indicating there's a good chance I've at least got second bowl. But it doesn't tell if I'm likely to have the shot bowl. Time to set a harder challenge.

So the new baseline is just to have two measures as indicated in the image above, being...

1. Bowls within one foot of the jack, and
2. Bowls within two to three feet of the jack.

No more counting of short bowls. By implication, anything not counted is either too short or long. If you're interested in using this solo scoring system yourself, you can access the score sheet by clicking here.

The first attempt at the new scoring system will be on Friday. Hope it doesn't end in tears!

  1. So how often do you have to measure in a session? Are you just eyeball estimating these one foot and 2-3 foot bowls or are you measuring? Do you remove the jack and measure with a regular tape measure or do you use a lawn bowls tape with the plastic thing-a-ma-bob on the end?

    1. I just measure having bowled all four bowls, so there are eighteen measurements (at the end of each end), Clarke. The measurement is done by using my foot... if a bowl isn't clearly within three feet I use my foot as a measuring tape. Regards, John
