First solo practise session of the new outdoor season, and lots to think about. For the rules on solo practising see 'Solo practise... baselining progress'.
The net score of -2 was nothing to write home about. Rather poor actually, meaning out of the seventy-two bowls, I bowled two more short than I got within one metre of the jack. In fact, I bowled a lot of short bowls. Thirty-one, in fact. Only ever bowled more short bowls once before, and that was way back last July on my second ever solo practise. On the positive side, in fact the hugely positive side, I bowled the second highest ever total of bowls within one metre of the jack.
The whole session was governed by me getting my brain around just how hard I had to heave the bowls to get them up to the jack, particularly on long ends. There had been slight rainfall earlier, so the green was a bit on the heavy side, added to which it took me a while to overcome the effects of playing indoor bowls.
A quick analysis of the averages for the first nine and last nine ends tells the tale....
First nine ends : Bowls within one metre = 1.2, Bowls short = 2.0
Last nine ends : Bowls within one metre = 2.0, Bowls short = 1.4
If I can continue to get half my bowls within one metre of the jack, and just heave the others somewhere behind the jack, I'm going to stand a real chance of getting selected for one of the men's league teams at the selection competition on Thursday, and winning against my brothers on their visit this coming weekend.
Tomorrow evening got a practise game against Geoff, my partner in our 2013 club doubles final runner up team, and lead bowl for the men's A team. Now that's going to be a real challenge!
