Another three week break in indoor bowls. Play again next Wednesday, the start of a run of five matches in eight weeks to the end of the indoor season. That'll be the most consistent run of games I've had. Just enough to really give me a chance to get into the swing of how to play indoor bowls... before I forget it all again until next autumn!
While inactive, been reading another book spotted on the last library visit. This one was first published in 1984 and really shows its age. Content a bit jumbled up and not nearly so useful as the book by David Bryant and Tony Allcock described in Draw the Line.
The only thing I took note of was a suggestion that when a bowler gets ready for delivery, the back foot should point towards the jack, the lead foot along the line of delivery. Here's the idea, and my current stance. If the foot placements seem a bit strange it's because I'm left handed, so switch around for right handed.
Now, I have trouble staying upright at the best of times. Bit of a legend in our family for tripping up. So it isn't helpful that every time I've tried the recommended set up I nearly end up flat on my face.
Thinking about it, I use a static delivery, so need a good steady base. The recommended foot placement probably works if you're moving forward when delivering the bowl. But then what about a backhand delivery? You'd have to point the lead foot at the jack, back foot along the line of delivery. Surely that would be confusing. Think I'll be sticking with my current stance.
Current instruction (2014) that I have received both in Canada and in Australia has both feet parallel and pointing along the delivery line.
ReplyDeleteI don't even think about my feet now Clarke... whatever feels comfortable and gets the bowl delivered along the right line does me. I'm intending to video my delivery soon, so we'll see what that reveals!
