Harry Roscow Trophy - August 2020

On the green just after 2.00pm for the main event. Weather warm, sky light grey. Toss a coin for order of play. Andrew against Robert first, me marking.

Robert gains an early lead, 4 - 1 after three ends. Overnight moisture is evident on the bowls and Andrew is struggling to find length with Robert's short jacks. Gets back on track with three winning ends, now 4 - 6 to Andrew. Robert fights back with four ends to him and 9 - 6. By now the green has dried off and Andrew's long jacks win him the remaining eight ends and the first match 22 - 9.

Next up me and Andrew and a move of rink. There's nothing in it by end 5, score 5 - 5. Then Andrew moves up a gear, winning the next four ends to go 5 - 12. The heads are tight but he's just edging it. The next three to me to go 9 - 12. It's pretty even, me keeping just a few bowls behind. Then a disastrous four on the seventeenth, now 10 - 17 and Andrew one end away from victory. But I'm not giving up yet. Three of the next four ends are mine as I close the gap to 17 - 18. On the twenty-second end Andrew is sitting with two, I've got bowls at the back. Twice I just miss carrying the jack through by millimetres. Andrew's last bowl increases his shot bowls to three and a 17 - 21 win.

Final match me against Robert. The sun has come out and it's much warmer. Already on the green for over two hours, we're all flagging. Pretty evident Robert has a back twinge and is not at his best. I win 21 - 3.

Congratulations to Andrew, who keeps the trophy. The following day we have the awards ceremony in Andrew's garden. We also decide playing three full matches in one afternoon is a bit crazy. Likely we'll have a couple of sessions on Friday and Sunday, each over twelve ends, the winning whoever has the highest aggregate score. The scorecards are shown below.
