Been thinking about how I could have lost yesterday's semifinal when I was 15-9 in the lead. Up to that point my line and length had been very good and it was a rare end when I didn't have at least one bowl close to the jack. From that point I won only another three bowls to my opponents twelve. Why? That just shouldn't happen!
Finally worked it out. Been getting great and consistent accuracy of line by using secondary aiming points. Sunset is now 8.30pm and light levels start dropping about an hour before that. Right about the time I started to lose my lead.
Line accuracy dipped because I was having increasing difficulty finding and then hitting my secondary aiming points in the twilight. The effect, a handful of deliveries that were too narrow. Only needed to change a couple of my opponent's winning ends to my advantage and I would be in the final.
Won't make that mistake again. Next evening match is on Monday, a Drawn Pairs quarter-final. As light levels drop, I'll be switching to primary aiming points at the end of the rink. Good to identify the problem in the first rather than the last semi-final.
