Quarter-final of the Over 60s Club competition this evening, played over sixteen ends. My opponent a B Team player I've knocked out of two other competitions this season. After yesterday's surprise result, I'm trying to find ways to think myself the underdog. Notice that a Champion of Champions semi-final is being played on rink one. One of the top St Ives players is in that. Drawn him in another Club competition quarter-final and we'll probably meet in a couple more. New to the Club, we've never played each other before. So a chance to give him cause for concern.
I go into an early lead. Bowling well. The gap narrows to just one by the tenth end as my opponent starts to improve his line. Then I just take off and win all of the remaining six ends by some margin. Could have finished after the fourteenth end. Final result 22-8 to me.
Sometimes you have to suspend belief to get the right line and length. The wide hand required a staring point outside the edge of rink marker. The length required a swing that seemed to ensure the bowl was destined for the ditch. Once I overcame a subconscious aversion to playing that wide and that strongly, my bowls were resting very close to the jack. Here's the scorecard below.
