One of those moments

Every bowler remembers the odd world class shot they play. And every bowler does play such a shot periodically. It's what makes bowls such an attractive game. I'll remember a spell of just under an hour this afternoon when I played a string of world class ends.

We're playing an Over 60s match against Chatteris Bowls Club. Three rinks of triples, each player with three bowls. I'm playing lead. Behind on the other two rinks, we're even on our rink. Go in for tea and biscuits after nine ends at 7-7.

'They've put something in the tea' is a regular joke in the Over 60s league when there's a marked change in the performance of one of the triples. After a couple of ends the joke is aimed at me. Playing maximum length ends, I'm rolling all three bowls right up to the jack. A third end of similar accuracy and the opposition are checking my damp cloth to see what the magic ingredient is.

By the end of those three ends we've gained twelve to lead 19-7. Now I understand the importance of a good lead bowler. My bowls are putting the opposition under such pressure they're all over the place. With the jack at maximum length, they get no success in trying to upset the head.

Even after those three ends my bowls are homing in on the jack. On a couple of ends, when the line on my first is a bit narrow, my second picks up the jack and moves it so both bowls are close. Get the feeling anything is possible.

End the afternoon winning our rink 22-13. We also win on one of the other rinks and score the highest total bowls, so 5-2 to us in points.
