Could have done better

Be better
Important Men's 4s league away match this evening against Eynesbury C. They're in the relegation zone, second from bottom. We're not much better, third from bottom and two points ahead of them. Still on target for a drop-avoidance forty points total for the season, if we lose tonight we could be in trouble.

Starts well. At the halfway point we're ahead by some margin on rinks 1 and 3, not so good on rink 2. Assuming a win on two rinks, we need to keep a good lead on both and minimise the difference on our losing rink to win the bonus point for the highest total bowls. That would give us a 5-2 points win. Would be very happy with that.

Unfortunately, it seems we're keen to make a game of it. At 19-6 up on our rink 1, the opposition gain ten in three ends. At 19-16 it's a nervy last three ends before we win 21-17. On rink 3 it's even worse. 21-10 up with three ends to go, we lose 8 to squeak through 21-18 winners. No such gap narrowing on our losing rink, where we end 11-21 down.

So we win the match 4-3 in points. Offered that at the start of the evening, I'd have happily taken it. But we should have done better.

Happy with my bowls. Dreadful rink. Under the shade of a huge tree, was very heavy going. A couple of bowlers were doing so much damage to the green by launching from height, we had to move the mat up to avoid divots.
