Men's Handicap - 1st Round

Bit spooked when I turned up for the match this evening. My opponent turned up in his monogrammed club shirt, fresh from playing for the club first team against Godmanchester. Oh dear, got a bit of a fight on my hands here!

With a handicap of 4, he had to reach 25 to win, me only 21. And after the first three ends I jumped into a lead which I never lost, other than when he managed to draw level after nine ends.

Got a bit fraught after 22 ends when I was ahead 20-12 and needed only one more wood to win. Could have kicked myself when I let him get six back in the next two ends to go 20-18. Asked him if he'd ever seen a grown man cry.

At last managed to win on the 25th end 21-18. In fact I didn't need the advantage of the handicap to win! Consoled him that he was probably exhausted after playing all afternoon... but I'd been to the afternoon club roll up so no difference there. Reviewing the score card I'm annoyed I let him score four woods in two of the ends, almost half his total score.

Noticed it's the second time I've worn my bright orange socks and the second time I've won. Are they my lucky socks?

Lesson learned : How important it is to get at least one wood near to the jack to avoid losing by three or four. Will aim not to give four away in one end in future!
