We've had loads of new members join this year. One of them had me a bit stumped when I was explaining all the ways he could bowl and get to meet other members. Still working, he can't get to the two afternoon social roll ups. Over 60s league matches are played on Wednesday afternoons. No chance of getting into the Thursday evening Men's Fours teams as a beginner. And the Club competitions had already been drawn.
Began to realise just how retirement-friendly our Club is. Some of our top players are working members, but they've been playing since very young, encouraged by their bowling parents. We used to have a Monday evening social roll up. Could we start this up again as an answer? Tabled it at a committee meeting. Put a notice up asking for names. Got ten. That's enough.
So this evening we held our first Monday evening social roll up. Eight members turned up, four of whom are new this year. Enough for two rinks, each playing pairs. Four bowls each player, eighteen ends. Great advantage was much cooler conditions. The weather has been baking for weeks and looks like it will be for a least another fortnight. So afternoon roll ups are hot and sticky.
On our rink we had an enjoyable couple of hours. Won 24-10. Consistency a bit wobbly. Stuck the notice above on the Club noticeboard, hoping to attract more players.
