Mens 4s league match, away to Buckden Bowls Club. We beat them easily at home so should gain some more points this evening. Even better, they've only got three players on rink 5. Two will play with three bowls and their score will be reduced by one-quarter.
By the half-way point things are not quite going according to plan. We're losing 4-10 on rink 4. Rink 5 is down 5-10. Even a reduction of one-quarter and the opposition is still ahead! Rink 3 might be our saviour, winning 8-4.
The whole match hinges on the last delivery by the opposition skip on our rink. We've caught up, but go into the last end 16-18 down. No worries, we're sitting with three as their skip's last driving bowl is delivered too wide. We're already telling our skip not to bother with his last delivery, when the wide bowl clips another of the opposition's and nudges it into the jack. We're only holding one now! Gives our skip a very difficult shot with his last, which is stopped in its tracks by a short bowl.
So we end losing the match 2-5 in points. That one lucky shot stole two points. The story of our whole season.
Before the start I told players I will be giving up the B Team captaincy at the end of the season to give me a chance to bag an A Team selection. Wouldn't you know it... my performance as lead this evening was anything but of A Team standard. Too many wayward bowls.
