Over 60s Triples this afternoon against Eynesbury. I'm playing second. Weather doesn't look too promising, but it's late in the season and not much time to arrange an alternative date. The changing room is full of miserable fair-weather bowlers changing into their waterproofs. A few are more than miserable, having left their waterproofs at home. Thinking the match might be called off, I'm very happy to play. Would play bowls in a hurricane.
Since it rains heavily throughout, the match is restricted to the minimum twelve ends. Green very heavy and full of worm casts. The main problem is getting your bowls dry and mud-free before delivery. I'm using four cloths. One to wipe the mud and water off, a second microfibre cloth to get the bowl as dry as possible, a third to cover the bowls while I'm waiting to bowl and a fourth as backup. Pretty soon all are damp. Even if I the bowl is ready, it's impossible to dry my hand.
Always amazed how unprepared some bowlers are. Quite a few have nothing to wipe their bowls. No surprise it's anyone's guess where their bowls end up.
We win on our rink, overall a 5-2 win. No surprise a number of my bowls are a bit wayward, but am very happy to hear their skip say three shots I managed to roll right up to the jack when their shot bowl was millimetres away possibly made the difference on our rink. To be honest, they could have ended up anywhere!
