We're promoted!

Been a few weeks since we last saw an updated set of league tables. Apparently the secretary's PC crashed. So it's a pleasant surprise to realise before this evening's last match that we can't be caught by the third placed team since they'v played all their games. We've gained promotion as one of the top two teams. Even bigger surprise to realise we're equal points with the leaders, separated only by a nine bowl difference deficit.

We're away to Brampton B. I rally the troops beforehand so they all know what's at stake. Eynesbury C are playing away tonight as well at Huntingdon C. So a good result by us this evening just might secure top place.

All looks a bit desperate at first. On rink four we're chasing well past the half way point, and then string together six out of seven good ends to go 18-9 in the lead. They rally but can't catch up, 18-16 to us.

Rink three never looks in the game and loses 13-20. That's the bonus point gone. Rink two claws their way back into the match and stand 17-18 down with two to play. A couple of singles see the opposition win 17-20.

So we lose the match 2-5 in points. Might be enough to win top spot, if Eynesbury C lose 0-7. Really dark during the last few ends. Could hardly see the other end of the rink.

We retire to the clubhouse for a meal. When clubs visit St Ives they always get a warm meal such as potatoes, vegetables, pie and gravy. Each of our players contribute £2.50 and the ladies prepare the food. Bit of an anachronism, a hangover from when a 6.30pm start meant working men missed their tea. Almost always cheese or ham rolls when we're playing away, and guess what we're served this evening.

Here are the scorecards.
