Popping down for a solo practice this evening, surprised to find the clubhouse all abuzz. Of course... it's the County Presidents' Closing Day. St Ives Bowls Club has provided both men's and lady's presidents this year, so the place is packed with blazers and much jollity. They've finished their meal and drink and are quite happy. So a delayed start for me, I mooch around my allotment plot.
When I do get started I'm alternating between long and short ends. On some cases very short, taking the matt right up to the limit and the jack two yards from the ditch. In the process I make a useful discovery. Whilst I can get one or two bowls close on a maximum length jack and a shortened backswing has sorted my problem with short ends, my best length is what most bowlers favour... a medium length. I can get at least three bowls close for a medium length. So I only need to use a long jack to upset an opponent's rhythm.
Takes me a while to get a bowl right up against the jack, but the overall result is that I hit the target for only the second time this year, half my bowls within three feet of the jack. Looking good for our pairs semifinal on Wednesday evening. Here's the updated graph and scorecard.
